Owen Herlin 

Cracked concrete accumulates enough dust for a wandering dandelion to take root. The inevitable reconstruction of our world at the hands of nature will be the most beautifully frightening event. One that is already visible in the slow decay of our built environment and the rapid change of our climate. Post-industrial zones left to their devices. Participating with the encroaching natural world; my work integrates materials from my local environment. Using clay, wood ash, milkweed fibres, and recycled paper to anticipate these ever-present forces that will eventually reclaim my materials. In doing so I want my work to engage with larger ecological timelines, such as those which the earth takes to weather clay into rock. From the paper to the delicate forms of high-fire porcelain, everything is meant to find its way back to smashing waves and encroaching weeds.

Owen Herlin is a Tiohtià:ke (Montréal) based artist exploring ceramics, zines, clothing, and creative reuse. Their practice integrates recycled paper, wild clay, wood ash, and other waste materials. Owen completed their Bachelor of Ceramics at Concordia University in 2024. During their degree, they attended the Guldagergaard International Ceramic Research Center, exploring atmospheric firings, and the use of natural materials in ceramics. They have led workshops on creative reuse at Concordia, Art in the Park, and other Ateliers in Montreal. Their work has been exhibited at Stephen Bulger, Albright Knoxx, Eastern Bloc, Atelier Galerie 2112, Art Mûr, and Expozine.

Le béton fissuré accumule suffisamment de poussière pour qu'un pissenlit vagabond puisse y prendre racine. L'inévitable reconstruction de notre monde par la nature sera l'événement le plus beau et le plus effrayant. Un événement déjà visible dans la lente dégradation de notre environnement bâti et le changement rapide de notre climat. Des zones post-industrielles laissées à l'abandon. En dialogue avec la nature qui reprend ses droits, mon travail intègre des matériaux de mon environnement local. J'utilise de l'argile, des cendres de bois, des fibres d'asclépiade et du papier recyclé pour anticiper ces forces omniprésentes qui finiront par reconquérir ces matériaux. Ce faisant, je souhaite que mon travail s'inscrive dans des échelles de temps écologiques plus vastes, telles que celles nécessaires à la terre pour transformer l'argile en roche. Du papier aux formes délicates de la porcelaine cuite à haute température, tout est destiné à retourner aux vagues déferlantes et aux herbes envahissantes.

Owen Herlin est un artiste basé à Tiohtià:ke (Montréal) qui explore la céramique, les fanzines, le vêtement et la réutilisation créative. Sa pratique intègre du papier recyclé, de l'argile sauvage, des cendres de bois et d'autres matériaux de récupération. Owen a obtenu son baccalauréat en céramique à l'Université Concordia en 2024. Durant ses études, il a participé à une résidence au Centre international de recherche en céramique Guldagergaard, où il a exploré les cuissons atmosphériques et l'utilisation de matériaux naturels en céramique. Il a animé des ateliers sur le réemploi créatif à Concordia, à Art in the Park et dans d'autres ateliers montréalais. Son travail a été exposé chez Stephen Bulger, Albright Knoxx, Eastern Bloc, Atelier Galerie 2112, Art Mûr et Expozine.
